With a holiday weekend ahead, it’s time to head straight up to Canyon Village from work. When passing Hayden Valley, it was past 8:30 and dark, but one of the largest traffic jams I’ve seen for this time of year. Everyone was focused on the east side, towards the Wapiti rendezvous area. Looks like I have my morning spot picked out.
Two Katmai trips in a month?? Yup. Here we go again with more bears from a different section of the park.
For this somewhat impromptu trip, I’m flying from Anchorage to King Salmon, and then taking a float plane to Brooks Camp for three nights.
With the snowfall from early June a distant memory, this was one of the nicest weekends so far this year. It’s warm summer weather with wildflowers down in the valleys.
This last week or so had some a variation of spring-summer weather. Technically meteorological summer has started on the 1st of June. Early summer here means snow-melt and maybe a rogue snow shower.
Back at Madison for the evening. What a difference in the weather! My car thermometer reported 60 degrees at the campsite. It was nice not bundling up so much this time.
After making camp, I’ll go park at a turnout somewhere along Madison River to eat my sandwich. There was an unidentified K-9 wandering through and bison/elk in the area. Some red dogs starting to show up in this area as well.
The days leading up to this weekend was very wintery. Thursday morning Teton Valley had several inches of snow on the ground. It’s pretty, but I’m sort of over it.
We were able to secure a permit in late February this year. A group of six traveled on three sleds, two of us were on the trip last year with four new people.
Traveled from Victor to Gardiner Saturday. The temps were moderate enough to pitch a tent in Mammoth. 20s at night is about the same as Canyon Village in June.
The weather has been so nice this late in the season, I decided to camp the last weekend the south roads were open. I wanted to hike around Lamar Valley on Saturday, so I stayed at Mammoth instead of Lewis Lake, which was also open. Last time I stayed up here was in February. I made it to a site at around 8:30.
